Thank You for a Successful 10th Annual SAFEWALK-RUN!

On Oct. 26th, in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, 900+ community members took to the pavement at Markham Park to raise awareness about domestic violence and to raise funds for the much needed programs and services offered by Women In Distress.

The SAFEWALK-RUN united community leaders, families, student and professional groups, companies, and many more in taking a step to end domestic violence. Over $80,000 was raised in support of the crisis intervention and shelter services offered by Women In Distress.

Among those in attendance were Honorary SAFEWALK-RUN Chair and domestic violence survivor, Commissioner Kristin Jacobs, Emcee Lynn Martinez from WSVN and Emcee Froggy from Y100. Over 100 volunteers helped to make the event possible, including Girl Scout Troop 882 who has passed out t-shirts and goodie bags for the past 5 years.  Troop leader Sandra Ellinger commented that, “helping with the walk will have a lifetime effect on the older girls and their understanding of abuse.”

Scattered throughout the race course were red silhouettes, “silent witnesses”, representing each victim who lost their life to domestic violence this past year and participants received event t-shirts which included the Women In Distress crisis line prominently displayed on the back.   Helping to make the event possible were presenting sponsors JM Family Enterprises Inc. and South Florida Sun-Sentinel.  Other key supporters included Target, Memorial Healthcare Systems, Broward Health, Roof System Services, ValPak, FirstWatch Café, Y100, WSVN  and other dedicated friends of the organization.

SAFEWALK-RUN fundraising will remain open until Nov. 15th, 2008.  Online donations can be made at www.active.com/donate/safewalkrun2008.
