Women In Distress rolls out red carpet for volunteers

2008 Volunteer Appreciation

Women in Distress of Broward County, Inc. brought the glitz and glamour of Hollywood to the Jim & Jan Moran Family Center at “An Evening With the Stars,” which took place on Friday, April 11, 2008.

The event was held in the Janet A. Boyle Auditorium to honor the approximately 700 volunteers who saved the agency more than $430,000 through donated time, lending a hand with speaker’s bureau events, administrative tasks, special committees, child care, data entry, auxiliary groups, donated professional services, and much more.

More than 100 WID volunteers, staff members, and community supporters made red carpet arrivals at the event, which was sponsored by JM Family Enterprises, VISTA Healthplans, Sun-Sentinel, Southern Wine & Spirits, and North Broward Medical Center.

Throughout the evening, presenters from each department called their nominees up to the stage and presented them with a chocolate-covered Oscar statuette. The winners for each department were presented with their names on the volunteer recognition plaques that will be displayed in the second floor lobby of the Family Center.

The 2007 winners are as follows:

Volunteer of the Year: Fran Asaro

Administrative Volunteer of the Year:  Dorothy DeMay

Student Intern of the Year:  Donna Bivona

Advocacy Services Volunteer of the Year: Fran Asaro

Development Volunteer of the Year: Lois Herman

Pro Bono Services Volunteer of the Year: Alexander of Alexanders

Shelter Services Volunteer of the Year: Patricia Minski

Social Change Volunteer of the Year: Allison Cagnetta

Speaker’s Bureau Volunteer of the Year: Vetra Harrison

Professionals Educating & Advocating Respect in Relationships (PEARR) Volunteer of the Year: Charlotte Sundquist

Women in Distress Auxiliary (WIDA) Volunteer of the Year: Betty Schultze

All of the volunteers attending the event received a silver coffee mug engraved with the WID logo in appreciation of their hard work.

“I never did this for any kind of acknowledgement. When you do something from your heart the acknowledgement is not important, but it is appreciated very much,” said Fran Asaro, 2007 Volunteer of the Year. “I thank you so much for honoring me in doing what truly feeds my soul.”

There is no excuse for abuse. Domestic violence hurts everyone.
